FPIK-UMI Signs Cooperation Agreement with the Directorate of Capture Fisheries, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Strengthening Higher Education Collaboration in National Fishery Resources Management

JAKARTA — The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universitas Muslim Indonesia (FPIK-UMI), Makassar, has officially established a cooperation agreement with the Directorate of Capture Fisheries, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia (KKP RI). The Cooperation Agreement (Perjanjian Kerja Sama/PKS) was signed on Saturday, October 24, 2026, in Jakarta.

The signing of this agreement is part of an effort to strengthen synergy between the government and higher education institutions, including public and private universities, in supporting the implementation and achievement of National Priority Work Programs, particularly in the areas of fishery resources management and sustainable capture fisheries.

FPIK-UMI was represented by its Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Hasnidar, M.S., IPM., demonstrating the institution's commitment to expanding strategic partnerships, enhancing academic contributions, and implementing the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi) through collaboration with government agencies.

The agreed cooperation encompasses six main areas: (1) collection of catch data and fish biological data; (2) processing and analysis of catch data and fish biological data; (3) human resource capacity development through internships, practical training, fieldwork, and community service programs; (4) research related to fishery resources management; (5) dissemination of scientific knowledge and publication of research findings from data collection and research activities; and (6) strengthening fishery resources management within Fisheries Management Units (Unit Pengelola Perikanan/UPP) across Indonesia's Fisheries Management Areas of the Republic of Indonesia (WPPNRI).

This partnership holds strategic significance for the development of higher education in fisheries and marine science, as it creates opportunities for FPIK-UMI lecturers and students to participate directly in data collection, research, analysis, and fishery resources management activities. Consequently, the learning process will not be limited to classrooms and laboratories but can also be enriched through field experience and direct involvement in national fisheries management programs.

The Dean of FPIK-UMI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Hasnidar, M.S., IPM., stated that this cooperation represents an important step in strengthening the role of higher education institutions as strategic government partners in generating high-quality scientific data and information to support fisheries management policymaking.

According to her, the availability of accurate catch data and fish biological data, supported by scientific research and comprehensive analysis, is essential to achieving responsible, effective, and sustainable fishery resources management.

"Through this cooperation, FPIK-UMI is committed to making an active contribution by strengthening academic capacity, conducting collaborative research, involving students in field activities, and disseminating research findings that can provide tangible benefits for the development of the national fisheries sector," she stated.

Furthermore, this partnership is expected to serve as a platform for developing FPIK-UMI graduates' competencies, enabling them to become more adaptable to workforce demands and the challenges of fisheries management. Student participation in field data collection and research activities will also provide valuable opportunities to enhance technical skills, analytical abilities, and understanding of the dynamics of fishery resources management across Indonesia's Fisheries Management Areas (WPPNRI).

Through the signing of this Cooperation Agreement, FPIK-UMI reaffirms its commitment to continuously strengthening collaboration with ministries, government agencies, the business sector, and other relevant stakeholders. This synergy is expected to generate academic contributions and innovations that support sustainable fishery resources management while reinforcing the role of higher education institutions in advancing Indonesia's marine and fisheries development.
